Common black-eyed Susan
Rudbeckia hirta may behave as an annual, biennial or a short-lived perennial, depending on its growing conditions. Easily grown from seed, it will bloom in mid-summer after having been sown outside in early spring. This makes it an excellent cover crop for a newly cleared sunny site. It is a valuable nectar source for a range of pollinators, a larval host to several species of butterflies, and late in the season it provides food for seed-eating birds.
