The caterpillar of the Monarch butterfly depends upon our native milkweed plants to survive. Adult Monarch butterflies lay their eggs on these plants. Once the larva hatch, they feed on the milkweeds, growing into the adult caterpillar shown here. These caterpillars then pupate, emerging about ten days later as adult butterflies. Without the native Asclepias (milkweeds) we would not have Monarch butterflies.
