Our native dogwood (Cornus florida) is not only beautiful, it supports over one-hundred species of butterflies and moths. In stark contrast, the now popular Kousa dogwood (Cornus kousa) from China, which is largely planted instead, is not known to support insect life at all here in New England. The consequences of this extensive substitution of exotic plants for our native species have been significant, resulting in our continued loss of biodiversity and well-balanced ecosystems.
