Look Before You Sow! Beware the Pretty Wildflower Seed Mix

At an environmental community event I attended last April, a garden club table was handing out free “butterfly garden” seed packets, part of a give-away from a large seed company. Other attendees were delighted to get this freebie, but when I saw the species list on the packet, I realized that these future seed-sowers were being led down the proverbial garden path.

Wildflower seed mixes are often marketed as a simple one-stop-shop way to support pollinators and restore ecological health. With bright packaging, images of bees and butterflies, and compelling labels like “northeast wildflowers”, “pollinator friendly,” “non-GMO,” or “neonicotinoid free,” they can seem like an easy, reliable choice. But ecological gardeners should approach these mixes with care. Commercially available blends are often designed first and foremost to put on a show for people, not create ecologically valuable habitat for pollinators.

How can you tell? Take a close look at the species list. A mix that prioritizes ecological value should be weighted heavily (or entirely) toward native plant species, which, because of their long co-evolutionary history with native insects, support healthier and more diverse pollinator populations. A collection of natives that encompasses a range of bloom times and flower shapes will have the greatest ecological impact. The non-native ornamental wildflowers frequently included in seed packets do attract insects, but mostly common generalist species that are already abundant in human landscapes, and not the pollinators that most need our help.

A seed mix intended for habitat creation should be designed to produce a lasting assemblage of plants. Commercial mixes often contain half a dozen annual species that bloom quickly and prolifically, with a dazzling array of colors. Instant gratification! But to include that number of annuals, suppliers have to use non-native species, because there are not many showy native annuals in our regional palette, and even fewer that are available from major seed producers. This limits the habitat value of the plants that bloom in the first year after sowing. And if the blend doesn’t also contain sufficient perennials - either by species or seed quantity - this reduces the chance of getting diverse, sustained blooms in subsequent seasons. 

Guidelines for designing seed mixes for pollinator habitat restoration recommend that annual/ biennial wildflowers make up less than 10% of the mix by volume (seeds per sq. ft.), with as much as 95% of the species diversity in perennial grasses and forbs. Since annuals grow so readily and prolifically from seed, they don’t need to take up half of the mix to produce a flush cover crop in the first year. Maximizing the array of long-lived species offers the best likelihood of establishing a successful plant community.

If you are now eyeing the wildflower seed packets on your kitchen table with a new level of skepticism, seize the opportunity to do a bit of discovery. While you review the species list (scientific names are especially helpful) to check whether each plant is native to your region, also look up its height, preferred conditions, and growth habit. If the mix contains some plants you want but others that you are reluctant to grow, try sowing them in a container first rather than directly into your garden. In fact, unless you are working on a large landscape installation, sowing seed in containers typically yields better results.
