Part of our Native Plants for Cape Cod Life celebration!

Cape Cod is part of an ecoregion we call the pine barrens, a name that belies the rich, thriving natural communities that give this place its distinctive beauty. Understanding the conditions that shape the barrens and the plants that flourish here is key to creating ecologically vibrant gardens that thrive with minimal care, and enhance and protect the surrounding environment. Join Alex Kent of Kent Land Design to learn how he puts this understanding into practice on a tour of a Wellfleet home garden that he designed, installed, and maintains. This site includes a range of landscape elements (foundation plantings, a bioswale, raised beds, a mini meadow) full of drought-tolerant native plantings in sun and shade. We’ll discuss all aspects of the project from planning to ongoing management, along with guidance on how to work with your unique Cape Cod landscape and find inspiration in its challenges and harsh conditions.

Alex began landscaping in Wellfleet in 2016 and fell in love with the plant communities and gardens of Cape Cod. After working in fine horticulture at a small design build company in Wellfleet, Alex received a Masters of Landscape Architecture from Spitzer School of Architecture at the City College of New York in 2020. Alex began Kent Land Design in March of 2021 and continues to love gardening and caring for this incredible place.
